little helpers for long travels (automatic translation with Systran)
On my scotland travel I took a little GPS reciver with me. It was a eTrex Vista without automatic navigation from
Garmin. This little waterproof device can be easy mount
everywhere at the bike and offer for it size a wide range of functions. The main range of use is hiking, cycling and trekking but it can be used on motorbikes and caars too. You know allways where you are without a paper map.
Since the equipment Autorouting does not have, one plans the distance which can be driven best at the PC at home. In addition min supplies the program map SOURCE and different map material. At the PC one can plan then mehere daily stages with up to 50 (with new firmware versions 250) waypoints. These points form then on the map of the equipment a line, at which one can orient oneself easily. Bending suggestions are not made, but one white always where one is.
Mit diesem GPS habe ich unsere Tour aufgezeichnet. Um den Speicher gut nutzen zu können und die komplette Tour aufzuzeichnen, habe ich die Speicherung der Wegpunkte fest auf 250m eingestellt. Das ist zwar etwas grob, aber bei der Gesamtlänge von über 3500KM genau genug um zu sehen, wo man langgefahren ist. Es enthält die Routen mit 50 Punkten und Tracks mit einer Genauigkeit von 250m pro Punkt. Das Höhenprofil ist ebendfalls mit gespeichert. Ich habe die Tracklogs dann am Computer aufbereitet und hier in der download section zum Runterladen eingestellt.

my first autorouting device
Some day I sold the eTrex Vista and bought a Garmin Quest1 in european version with 243MB memory. I mount it with a Touratech holder and an original Yamaha GPS bridge between the handlebars. The free memory of 243MB can be used for any kind of mapping data. The device have autorouting with voice prompts. It is fast and have a daylight color display. I dont use the voice promt on my bike but it is possible to do it. It is an nice help on long travels. The integrated accu have power for 20h of use without line. I like it.
Now I should be happy, but Garmin offer the Quest2. New features are 2GB memory, preloaded mapping data for whole europe and a point of interrest warner that can be used for announcing speedtraps. Sounds good, but the device is awful. It is very slow. Redraws take sometimes up to several minutes. Announcing turns comes too late and while routing the device crashes all the time. Dont buy it. I use it with firmware 2.8 and now I send it back to my dealer.

the best one
The year 2006 ends and my Quest2 was taken back by Garmin. I spent some more money and get a GPSmap278. That the big brother of the 276 and only available in Europe. It have 2GB flash memory with preloadet data of 33 countrys. It also have custom POI's. My favourite GPS should be the Zumo but after reading a lot of this device I found lot of missing features. You cant disable autorouting, the tracklog cleans out the altitude and you cant change the datafields. I will see in the next spring how good the 278 work on my bike. It made a solid impression to me.
Die erste Saison mit dem Garmin GPSmap278 liegt nun fast hinter mir. Es wird Herbst und es ist wieder mehr Zeit um etwas zum Thema zu schreiben. Meine Erwartungen in das Gerät wurden alle erfüllt. Es ist schnell, super abzulesen und bislang extrem zuverlässig. Ich hatte noch keinen einzigen Absturz der Software. Das Planen von Routen am Gerät selber ist ein Kinderspiel. Der POI Loader unterstützt einem beim Anlegen von eigenen Wegpunkten, die Beachtung verdienen. Obwohl das Gerät keinen Sirf-Empfänger besitzt, ist der Empfang meist einwandfrei. Ein paar kleine Minuspunkte gibt es aber auch zu nennen. So muss man auf teure Garmin Speicherkarten zurückgreifen, wenn man eigene Karten laden will. Tracklogs sind begrenzt auf 10.000 Punkte und lassen sich nicht auf der Speicherkarte ablegen, nur im Gerät selbst. Aber sonst ist das Gerät sehr genial.
